“Do Not Complain About Time Taken to Take Care of Your Face. It’s Your FACE”

“Do not complain about time taken to take care of your face. It’s your face.” Caroline Hirons.

The first time I read this quote I laughed out loud with a resounding YES!  In all honesty, I have never really understood the women who don’t look after their skin. After 14 years in the skin care industry I have heard every reason there is:

  • It takes too much time
  • My mum never did and she’s got great skin (does she?!)
  • I can’t be bothered
  • I don’t want to spend the money on expensive products
  • I have sensitive skin
  • I’m a soap and water girl
  • It’s just not a priority
  • I haven’t got the energy

I’m here to tell you that if you want to age gracefully (or even disgracefully!) you need to give your skin the loving attention it deserves.

I confess there was a period of time in my life when I would habitually fall asleep in front of the TV and stagger to bed without removing the day’s worth of grime, oil and makeup. Yuck! When I think back, I feel sorry for my skin having to choke its way through the night, not being able to ‘breathe’ through clogged pores and layers of muck. The day I committed to cleansing and moisturising my skin morning AND night, was the true transformation in the health of my skin.

The older I get the more comfortable I am in my skin and the more accepting I am of the lines that affirm that I laugh a lot, smile regularly, squint in the sun, frown in concentration, and a myriad of other signs that I have lived a number of years.  My plan is to acquire further evidence of a life well lived, and the issue for me isn’t about ‘anti-ageing’ (let’s get rid of that term please), it’s about caring for and respecting the health of my skin.

What does caring for my skin look like for me? Here are my top tips for healthy glowing skin:

  1. CLEANSE – Morning AND Night
  2. EXFOLIATE to remove dead skin cells
  3. TREAT the skin with a daily SERUM and a weekly MASK
  4. MOISTURISE – to hydrate, soften and smooth
  5. SUN PROTECTION – use a high SPF (30+)
  6. DRINK WATER – plenty of it
  7. EAT WELL – gut health is linked to healthy skin
  8. SLEEP – 7 to 8 hours a night

It’s never too late to start caring for your skin. If you get into a few good habits with a daily routine you will soon see the benefits. I assume you brush your teeth morning and night? It probably wouldn’t occur to you to NOT clean your teeth, even on those nights when you don’t feel like it. If you apply the same commitment to cleaning your face that you do to cleaning your teeth, a habit will quickly embed. Morning and night for 2-3 minutes is all it takes.

It’s easy to become confused by the vast array of skincare products on the market. I recall spending an entire lunch break shopping for a new moisturiser, bamboozled by the ingredients and benefits promised. I feel very fortunate that I was introduced to products that support the good health of my skin and that take the confusion out of what to buy. (I became so confident in the safety and benefits of the products that I became a Consultant so I could recommend them to others).

How about you? Do you make time and effort to care for your skin? Give some thought to what ‘healthy skin’ means to you and whether it might be time to consider a new routine that can set you up for the rest of your long healthy glowing life.
